  • Quilting dimensions:
30cm x 30cm. Quilting dimensions are approximates and vary depending on filling weight used.
  • Suitable Fabrics:
Plain and patterned fabrics. For large products such as bedspreads, quilt covers and some bedhead styles, wide width fabrics are recommended to avoid visible fabric joins. Where fabric joins are required, pattern fabrics will be pattern matched and plain fabrics or fabrics with minimal pattern will have exposed fabric joins. Durable medium to heavy weight fabrics preferred.
  • Process Used:
BQ use a quilting frame to create even tuft spacing. First we cut and join the fabric and then we quilt, providing perfect pattern and quilting match.

Half panel roman blind, lined or unlined (RB5)

A similar style to our full panel roman blind (RB4) but the intermediate (base edge of each stack) is a soft fold without a seam. Hence this style has less horizontal seams than the RB4 style blind. When the blind is fully stacked horizontal seams can not be seen.
Like the RB4 style, this blind is ideal for wider width windows if you’d like to avoid vertical fabric joins.

  • Suitable Fabrics:
This is the most suitable structured roman blind style, when using sheer or lightweight fabrics and a lined blind is required. This style can also be used with solid fabrics.
Select a preferably plain fabric, where horizontal seams will not interrupt the fabric pattern. For wide width windows, select a wide width fabric that can be railroaded to avoid vertical seams from fabric joins. Visit Customer Login for further fabric suitability info or contact BQ.
  • Lining:
This blind style is usually made lined but can be unlined on request. Our standard lined RB5 blind includes 3 pass blockout stiffened lining in ivory colour. Other lining options available include: 3 pass stiffened white lining, 3 pass non-stiffened white or ivory lining, 1 pass off white or ivory lining, translucent polyester neutral lining.
Half panel roman blind, lined (RB5)
  • Sizing:
Maximum size is 340cm wide x 300cm drop. BQ Design’s production warranty does not apply to blinds greater than 300cm wide x 300cm drop. Stack ups and batten spacing will be calculated based on total drop of blind and customer styling requirements specified to BQ. Front stacks range from 27.5cm to 33.5cm.
Full panel roman blind, lined or unlined (RB4)

A modern blind style with horizontal seams sewn in face fabric at all folds and visible at the intermediate (base edge of each stack) when the blind is raised. This style provides you with a soft roman if using sheer or lightweight fabrics without lining. Alternatively use this style with solid fabrics and stiffened 3 pass lining to create a firmer structured roman with horizontal seams.
This blind style is ideal for wider width windows if you’d like to avoid vertical fabric joins.
For an unlined RB4 blind, battens are sewn into back pockets of the main fabric at the base and top of each stack, giving the blind more structure than our other soft roman blind style RB6. Side edges of blinds can be sewn on request, if prefer to avoid tape.
For a lined RB4 blind, battens are sewn into the lining at the base and top of each stack.

  • Suitable Fabrics:
Suitable for solid, sheer or lightweight fabrics. Select a preferably plain fabric, where horizontal seams will not interrupt the fabric pattern. For wide width windows, select a wide width fabric or fabric that can be railroaded to avoid vertical seams from fabric joins. Visit Customer Login for further fabric suitability info or contact BQ.
  • Lining:
If adding lining to the RB4 style blind, our standard lining is 3 pass blockout stiffened lining in ivory colour. Other lining options available include: 3 pass stiffened white lining, 3 pass non-stiffened white or ivory lining, 1 pass off white or ivory lining, translucent polyester neutral lining.

Standard roman blind, lined (RB1)

A structured contemporary and popular blind style. The blind appears flat when down with no visible sewn seams except for wide width blinds that may require vertical fabric joins. Sits in a neat folded stack when blind is raised.

  • Suitable Fabrics:
Solid plain or pattern fabrics you want to showcase. For wider width blinds, print fabric will be expertly pattern matched where vertical fabric joins are required. For butting windows installed on the same window or bay windows, fabric pattern flow can be provided on request. Additional fabric metreage may be required. Velvets are not suitable for main fabric or bands. For light coloured sheers a RB4 style with sewn sides or a RB5 style is recommended. Visit Customer Login for further fabric suitability info or contact BQ.
  • Lining:
This blind style is always lined. Lining is built into the structure of the blind and battens are sewn into back pockets in the lining. Our standard blind includes 3 pass blockout stiffened ivory lining. Other lining options available include: 3 pass stiffened white lining, 3 pass non-stiffened white or ivory lining, 1 pass off white or ivory lining, translucent polyester neutral lining.

Front batten roman blind, lined (RB2)

A classic lined blind style with thin battens stitched into horizontal fabric pockets seen on the front side of the blind. The fabric pockets sit at the intermediate (base edge of each stack) when the blind is stacked.

  • Suitable Fabrics:
Solid plain or pattern fabrics where horizontal joins wont interrupt the pattern. Works well with vertical stripe fabrics. Avoid horizontal stripes. For wider width blinds, print fabric will be expertly pattern matched where vertical fabric joins are required. For butting windows installed on the same window or bay windows, fabric pattern flow can be provided on request. Additional fabric metreage may be required.

Velvets are not suitable for main fabric or band. For light coloured sheers a RB4 style with sewn sides or a RB5 style is recommended. Visit Customer Login for further fabric suitability info or contact BQ.

Flanged (BH10)

A flanged slip cover is pulled tightly over an upholstered bedhead frame. A 1cm flange sits on top and side edges. Flange size can vary on request.

Skirting board and base cut-out not available.

Bedhead shapes available: 9 only.

  • Suitable Fabrics:
We recommend a durable, stain resistant and easy to clean fabric suitable for upholstery use. Also consider the possibility of fabric fading if bedhead is positioned near a window.
BQ can manufacture this bedhead style with plain or print fabrics. We can also quilt your fabric prior to upholstering for added interest. The bedhead flange will also be quilted.
    View our quilting styles.
To avoid vertical fabric join seams BQ recommend wide width fabrics or railroading fabric (turning sideways), where fabric/pattern allows. Fabric railroading is not usually required for Single sized flanged bedheads unless you prefer the look of railroaded fabric. Where fabric joins are present, BQ will always attempt to pattern match print fabrics to minimise exposure of joins.
  • Mounting:
The following options are available for securing your bedhead:

    • Bedhead can sit on the floor between the bed and wall with no attachment to bed or wall.
    • All BQ bedheads are supplied with a wall mounting bracket to enable the bedhead to be attached to the wall, providing greater stability. Walls must be strong enough to hold 15-50kg of bedhead. The wall mounting bracket (2cm projection) is attached to the slip cover, hence cover can not be removed. Wall mounting bracket can be omitted on request.
    • Adjustable bedhead legs can be supplied by BQ, at an additional cost, providing stability and avoiding the need to secure bedhead to plasterwork. Bedhead will sit slightly above floor, as base cut-outs unavailable with this bedhead style.

The Flanged style bedhead sits up to 2cm away from wall if wall mounted above skirting boards or bedhead sits on floor between bed and wall. Skirting board cutout is unavailable.

Ideal for: bedspreads, quilt covers, throw rugs, bed valances, pillowcases, cushions, wall panels and bedheads.

BQ offer the following channel quilting methods:

  • Multi-needle channel quilting
  • Frame channel quilting
  • Outline channel quilting

The recommended quilting method depends on the size of the finished product, width and fabric (plain or patterned) used and required channel direction. All our channel quilting methods have the same filling and lining options mentioned below.

Multi-needle channel quilting

Multi-needle quilting is our most common channel quilting method and our most affordable quilting style.

Straight evenly spaced lines are quilted on the length direction of the fabric, to create channels.

  • Quilting dimensions:
The following channel widths are available: 7.5cm, 10cm, 12.5cm, 15cm, 17.5cm, 20cm or 22.5cm. Consider the finished size of your quilted product when deciding channel width. Use for reversible product styles only when fabric joins not required eg: throw rugs. Quilting dimensions are approximates and vary depending on filling weight used.
  • Process used:
The fabric is quilted first in panels approximately 150cm wide and of unlimited length. We then cut, join panels and sew your fabric according to the style and size of your selected product. This ensures fabric joins are concealed in the stitched channel. When joining pattern fabric on wide width products such as bedspreads and quilt covers, perfect pattern match can not always be achieved.
  • Suitable fabrics:
Plain or patterned fabric in standard or wide width where the pattern can be easily joined and pattern matched. Durable medium to heavy weight fabrics preferred. For patterned fabrics with wide pattern repeats or those that can not be easily patterned matched we may suggest channel frame quilting. For patterned fabrics with a horizontal or linear pattern, we suggest outline channel quilting if channels are to perfectly align with the fabric pattern.
  • Thread:
    Black or natural colour

Frame channel quilting

Channels can be sewn in a vertical or horizontal direction. Recommended for products using a coloured quilting thread rather than black or natural and for bedspreads and quilt covers using patterned fabric that is not easily pattern matched.

Maximum quilting area is 304cm wide x 279cm length. Some king size bedspreads may need to be outline or multi-needle channel quilted, due to restrictions on the sewing frame size.

  • Quilting dimensions:
The following channel widths are available: 15cm, 20cm, 25cm and 30cm. Consider the finished size of your quilted product when deciding channel width. Quilting dimensions are approximates and vary depending on filling weight used.
  • Process used:
First we cut and join the fabric and then we quilt, providing pattern and quilting match. Fabric joins will be exposed especially on plain fabrics.
  • Suitable fabrics:
Plain and patterned fabrics. Durable medium to heavy weight fabrics preferred. Wide width fabrics are recommended on larger products such as bedspreads and quilt covers, to avoid visible fabric joins. If channel quilting a patterned fabric and fabric joins are required, frame channel quilting may provide better pattern match than multi-needle channel quilting, although fabric joins are likely to be visible rather than hidden in channels as is possible with multi-needle channel quilting . For fabrics with a horizontal or linear pattern, we suggest outline channel quilting if channels are to perfectly align with the fabric pattern.
  • Thread:
Colour matched to suit the main background colour of your fabric.
Outline channel quilting

A straight line of stitching traces along the check or stripe pattern of the fabric, emphasising the fabric pattern and providing greater stitching accuracy as compared to other quilting methods. Recommended for king size bedspreads that may be too large for frame quilting.

  • Quilting dimensions:
Channel width is dependent on the fabric design.
  • Process used:
We cut and join the fabric first and then we quilt, providing pattern and quilting match. Outline quilting is completed by hand by our experienced machinists.
  • Suitable fabrics:
Patterned fabrics with a straight horizontal or linear pattern, and where quilting lines need to exactly follow the fabric pattern to form a quilted channel look. Durable medium to heavy weight fabrics preferred.
  • Thread:
Colour matched to suit the main background colour of your fabric.

Bonded Pelmet

An unpadded pelmet, available in a straight, shape 1 and 3 only.
Made with 4.5mm piping along top and base edge of pelmet, in self or contrast fabric. Piping can be omitted on request.
Fabric is bonded to a strong wood custom made pelmet frame.
Combine with curtains, roman blinds or roller blinds.

  • Suitable fabrics:
Most medium and heavy weight solid fabrics are suitable for pelmets, although linen and viscose blends may stretch over time. Light weight fabrics such as silks and sheers can be used but cotton interlining is recommended and can be supplied by BQ.
Fabrics can be railroaded on request to avoid joins or consider wide width fabrics to minimise amount of fabric required. If using a patterned fabric, railroading may not be suitable. BQ will expertly pattern match at fabric joins.
Bonded Pelmet

  • Sizing:
Provide width, drop and return measurements for either inside box measurements (IBM) or outside box measurements (OBM). Cut-outs can be added to ensure pelmet fits perfectly. Maximum drop is 40cm and maximum size of returns is 20cm. For pelmets over 390cm customer must organise own freight or collection from BQ’s Melbourne workroom. Alternatively, pelmets can be made in two or three pieces. We recommend three pieces to avoid a centre join and interruption to any fabric pattern.
Goblet Pleat

Goblet pleat curtains provide a formal style. If you are furnishing a traditional or stately old home and have a sumptuous fabric a Goblet style heading could be a good option.

BQ use 100mm wide clear buckram for the curtain heading and each goblet is filled with wadding.

  • Suitable Fabrics:
    Solid fabrics.
  • Lining:
Select from our range of blockout or translucent lining fabrics or supply your own. BQ’s standard lining is 3 pass blockout lining in ivory colour, attached to the curtain with plastic shanks unless otherwise requested. Goblet pleat curtains can also be made unlined when using a solid fabric.
  • Seams:
Vertical fabric join seams will be hidden on curtain.
  • Hooks:
When ordering, specify your preferred two prong hook size depending on the type of rod or track to be used and the curtain position required. Visit Customer Login for further hook info.
  • BQ standard fullness:
x2 for solid. Other fullness options available on request.

Gather - 1 row

Gather – 1 row

Gathered curtains are made with a heading tape that enables the fabric to be gathered up to create loose pleats.

BQ uses 30mm wide heading tape for each row of gathering.

Design your curtain with one, two or three rows of gathering tape depending on the heading look required. One row of gathering is the BQ standard.

Multiple rows of gathering offer more flexibility with hook positions providing greater control over where the heading sits in relation to the rod or track.

  • Suitable fabrics:
Solid and sheer fabrics although not recommended for bulky heavy fabrics.
  • Lining:
If lining your curtains, select from our range of blockout or translucent lining fabrics or supply your own. BQ’s standard lining is 3 pass blockout lining in ivory colour, attached to the curtain with plastic shanks unless otherwise requested. Alternatively install a dual curtain track or rod with a separate curtain made from blockout lining fabric.
  • Hooks:
When ordering, specify your preferred position of gathering hook depending on the type of rod or track to be used and the curtain position required.
  • BQ standard fullness:

Square

Ideal for: Bedspreads, quilt covers, throw rugs, bed valances, pillowcases, cushions, wall panels and bedheads. Maximum quilting area is 304cm wide x 279cm length. Some king size bedspreads may need to be outline or multi-needle channel quilted, due to restrictions on the sewing frame size.

  • Quilting dimensions:
BQ can quilt 15cm, 20cm, 25cm or 30cm squares. When selecting size of quilted square, consider the finished product size if a full square is to be achieved along the finished product edges. Quilting dimensions are approximates and vary depending on filling weight used.
  • Suitable Fabrics:
Plain and patterned fabrics. For large products such as bedspreads, quilt covers and some bedhead styles, wide width fabrics are recommended to avoid visible fabric joins. Where fabric joins are required, patterned fabrics will be pattern matched. Fabric joins can often be more visible and exposed on plain fabrics or fabrics with minimal pattern. Durable medium to heavy weight fabrics preferred.
  • Process Used:
BQ use a frame quilting method to create perfectly quilted squares. First we cut and join the fabric and then we quilt, providing perfect pattern and quilting match.

BQ offer the following scatter cushion design options:

  • Plain unpiped
  • Piped edges, with 4.5mm or 7mm piping in self or contrast fabric
  • Flanged edges in self or contrast fabric
  • Contrast fabric bands
  • Add trim, braid, tassels, fringe, covered buttons or French seam.
  • Add quilting

Polyester or feather inserts in standard sizes are available from BQ, or supply your own.

Cushions are made with a concealing flap to hide zip opening. Zip is colour matched to your fabric.

  • Suitable Fabrics:
When selecting a fabric consider usage of cushion, washing instructions, fabric shrinkage, durability, and softness against the skin. Light sheer fabrics are not suitable for cushions unless lined and used for decorative purposes. Outdoor fabrics can be used, however BQ do not use weather resistant zips, thread and foam. If adding contrast fabric piping, flange or reverse side to your cushion design, consider fabric composition and behaviour of the fabric as compared to the main fabric. For plain or flanged cushions with same pattern fabric used on both sides, some side seams can be pattern matched on request. Additional fabric may be required.

A normal roll, with roller sitting to front of blind and fabric falling to back of roller, is our standard configuration. A reverse roll, with roller sitting to back of blind is available on request, however BQ production warranty will not apply.
Alternatively add a pelmet or window valance to hide roller componentry.

Roll direction
A normal roll, with fabric falling to back of blind roller is our standard configuration. For bonded blinds, the blockout backing on the underside of the blind will be visible at the top of the blind where the roller sits. To hide this backing the blind can be made with a reverse roll (with fabric falling to front of blind roller) if fabric is suitable, however BQ production warranty will not apply.
Alternatively add a pelmet or window valance to hide top of roller.

Lining
Your fabric is carefully bonded to ivory (BQ standard) or white coloured blockout polyester backing. Bonded blinds fully block out light, although blinds installed in the recess of the window may let some light into the room where there is a gap between the blind and the window architrave.

Suitable Fabrics

Bonded blinds provide you with an opportunity to integrate plain or statement solid fabrics into your room.

The following fabrics are not suitable for bonded blinds: rayon/acetate, 100% polyester, sheers, linen, some silks, chintz and backcoated fabrics and fabrics with a high viscose content. BQ prefers fabrics to have at least 40% cotton content. Your fabric can be tested for suitability prior to ordering.

Suitable blind fabrics are processed through our unique specifically designed oven to stabilise fabric and reduce movement after manufacturing.

For wider windows, vertical fabric joins will be sewn if required. We will always attempt to pattern match print fabrics to minimise exposure of fabric joins.

For multiple blinds in a room, print fabric will be pattern matched from base of blind. If butting or adjoining blinds are to have pattern flow please notify BQ and ensure enough fabric is provided.

Plain edges

Unpiped plain quilt cover style.

Fabric can be quilted to add further interest to your quilt cover. Face side only is quilted, unless otherwise requested. View our quilting styles.

  • Suitable Fabrics:
Consider washing instructions, fabric creasing, shrinkage, durability, and softness against the skin when selecting a suitable fabric for your quilt cover. Polyesters, polyester/cotton mixes and pre-shrunk cottons wash well and are common fabrics used for bedding. Natural fabrics such as cottons and linens breath well but may shrink over time if not pre-shrunk. Linens are especially popular for a relaxed look. Sheer and velvet fabrics are not suitable for quilt covers.
If adding contrast fabric to underside of your quilt cover design consider the composition and behaviour of this fabric as compared to the face fabric. Single sized unquilted bedspreads can be made with standard width (140cm) fabrics. For all other quilt cover sizes, wide width fabrics are recommended to avoid fabric joins.Fabrics will be pattern matched at joins on quilt cover face side. Side seams can be pattern matched on request, if fabric pattern allows. Additional fabric may be required. The following fabric options are available for the underside of the quilt cover: same as face fabric, contrast fabric, customer supplied flat sheet or BQ provided ivory cotton lining.

    King:240cm W x 210cm L
    Super King:270cm W x 240cm L

Pleated Window Valance

Our standard BQ window valance is made with box pleats evenly spaced across the facade and front corners of the window valance. Pleats are positioned approximately 50cm apart depending on total width of window valance and a 15cm headboard projection is used, unless otherwise specified. Maximum drop is 50cm.

Window valances can also be made with a centre pleat and front corner pleats only or with a plain facade and box pleats in front corners only.

The plain facade style is recommended for smaller windows or windows with a blind and window valance in same print fabric.

  • Lining Options:
    • cotton supreme lining, in ivory (BQ standard) or off white colour
    • 1 pass lining, in ivory or off white colour
    • 3 pass blockout lining, in ivory or white colour
    • no lining
  • Suitable Fabrics:
Use solid, non sheer light to medium weight fabrics that will form sharp firm permanent pleats when pressed.
Upholstered Pelmet

A padded pelmet, available in straight or shaped styles.
Made with 4.5mm piping along top and base edge of pelmet, in self or contrast fabric. Piping can be omitted on request although it is recommended for shaped pelmets as gives a neater base finish. Piping can also be replaced with decorative cord.

For piping using striped fabrics, fabric is cut on the bias giving a diagonal stripe effect.
  • Bay windows:
If placing pelmets on a bay window, Straight, and shapes 1, 3, 4 (if centre is made straight) and 5 are available. In each instance the centre window of the bay will have a straight pelmet with shaped pelmets on both outer bay windows. Velcro tabs are supplied for butting pelmets to ensure a neat finish at the joins.
Upholstered Pelmet

no piping
  • Sizing:
Provide width, drop and return measurements for either inside pelmet box (IBM) or outside pelmet box (OBM).
Band with piping above

Suitable for straight upholstered style only.

Band and/or piping may be in contrast or self fabric and piping can be replaced with decorative cord.

Band is approximately 60cm high unless otherwise specified.

Chain options

Our blinds are chain operated providing smooth, consistent and reliable movement.

Chain colour options available include:

  • White plastic (BQ standard)
  • Birch white plastic
  • Black plastic
  • Nickel plated brass (silver in colour)
  • Stainless steel – rust resistant and recommended for bathrooms and seaside locations.

The chain is secured to a wall mounted chain tensioner by your installer, to ensure child safety regulations are met.

The blind brackets, chain drive and chain tensioner will be the same colour as the plastic chain or colour matched to the fabric if a nickel or stainless steel chain is used. Clear coloured chain tensioners are also available.

If you prefer a blind without a chain, you can add motorisation to your blind also ideal for hard to reach blinds. Spring operation is also available for some blind styles.

Flanged edges

The quilt cover is top stitched to create a self fabric flange edge or a separate flange can be added in self or contrast fabric.

BQ’s standard flange size is 8cm, or specify a different flange size.

Your quilt cover fabric can be quilted to add further interest. Face side only is quilted, unless otherwise requested. If adding a top stitched self fabric flange, the flange will also be quilted. If adding a separate flange in self or contrast fabric the flange will be unquilted. View our quilting styles.

Also decorative cord can also be added to flange edges.

Interlining

Cotton or bumph interlining in white or ivory colour is recommended for silks, sheers and lightweight fabrics. The addition of interlining placed behind the face fabric, helps reduce the chance of fabric discolouring, gives a truer colour to the face fabric and reduces obvious seams when fabric can’t be railroaded.

Fringe to base

Add fringe along base edge of pelmet.
