In this edition of our Designer Spotlight series, we meet the brilliant Josie Simpson – founder of Altus Design Studio – whose thoughtful, layered aesthetic and passion for collaboration have led to a growing portfolio of beautifully resolved interiors.

Whether she’s designing a sculptural light-filled residence or crafting a community-focused gym space, Josie approaches each project with purpose, originality, and heart. Tell us a little about yourself and Altus Design Studio. How did it begin, and what kind of clients do you typically work with?

I’m an interior designer working predominantly on residential projects, with the occasional boutique commercial space. Altus began with a love for creating considered, functional, and beautiful interiors that reflect the individuality of the people who live in them.

Over time, it has evolved into a collaborative studio that works closely with clients, artisans, and makers to bring these spaces to life. Most of our work comes through word of mouth, and we’re fortunate to work with thoughtful clients who value quality, craftsmanship, and a layered aesthetic that’s both expressive and refined.

What do you love most about your work as an interior designer?

I love helping people transform their homes – whether it’s a full renovation or a few key updates that breathe new life into a space. Every project is different, and that variety keeps the work dynamic.

I also really enjoy the collaborative nature of design: working with clients, trades, and makers to problem-solve and create something special together.

What are some recent projects you’ve enjoyed working on?

A recent highlight was a sculptural, light-filled home in Roseville designed in collaboration with Miwa Design. The project emphasised craftsmanship and layered materiality, with custom elements throughout.

At the moment, we’re working on two very different but equally exciting projects. One is a seniors’ gym with a warm, welcoming, and locally inspired design – aiming to create a space that feels community-minded rather than clinical. The other is a small but character-filled renovation in Sydney’s inner west, featuring multi-fabric banquette seating, stained glass windows, and boldly patterned kitchen splashbacks.

Are there any current trends in soft furnishings and fabrics you’re loving right now?

I’m drawn to soft furnishings that feel personal and expressive – whether that’s through unexpected fabric combinations or thoughtful tailoring. Texturally rich fabrics like heavy linens, cotton velvets, and wool blends are definitely having a moment. They add incredible depth and warmth to a room.

I’m also noticing more designers layering tonal variations and textures across upholstery, cushions, and window treatments to create a tailored, cohesive look.

In your view, what are the key benefits of working with an interior designer?

Interior designers live and breathe design every day – we bring a deep understanding of materials, finishes, and spatial flow that can really elevate a space. Even something as simple as selecting the correct curtain drop or placement can be the difference between a room feeling polished or incomplete.

We also guide clients through what can be a complex process – making sure every element works together seamlessly while saving time, stress, and costly mistakes.

Where do you find your creative inspiration?

Inspiration often strikes from a range of sources – the architecture of a home, travel, art, or even a single texture or material. I’m particularly inspired by unexpected colour combinations and playful details. Sometimes, an entire palette can be sparked by something a client is wearing – it’s all about tuning into what resonates with them and building from that point.
