Here’s what you need to consider when dressing bay or corner windows with soft furnishings.

Choosing the Right Window Treatment

The first step is determining the most appropriate style of window treatment for the space:

• Roman Blinds sit neatly above the window or in the window recess and are available in a range of tailored or relaxed styles to suit your room.  
• Bonded and Home Range Roller Blinds are streamlined, modern and compact. 
• Curtains on angled rods or tracks mounted to the wall or ceiling, can soften the architectural edges of a bay or corner window and allow for greater fabric flow and showcasing.
• Pelmets provide a polished finish especially in formal rooms, and can be teamed with roman blinds, roller blinds or curtains. They are wall mounted and effective in concealing roller blind components or curtain tracks while reducing light entering a room and improving energy efficiency by reducing heat and cooling loss.

Match the Treatment to the Room Function

Each room’s purpose informs the best combination of fabric type and mounting method:

• Bedrooms: Opt for face-fixed blinds or curtains with 3 pass lining, to block light entering the room. A pelmet can further enhance blackout performance.
  
• Living or Sitting Rooms: Add sheer curtains or blinds for privacy and to soften a room or blockout lined curtains or blinds for insulation and light control.
  
• Formal spaces: Use curtains or blinds with a pelmet for a sophisticated, seamless aesthetic.
  

If you’re looking for both sheer and blockout coverage for your bay or corner window, consider layering a sheer blind or curtain with a blockout curtain.

Consider the Fixing Style

Where you choose to mount the window treatment has a major impact on fit and performance:

• Wall-Mounted, Architrave-Mounted or Ceiling-Mounted: Best for larger spaces and windows where coverage needs to extend beyond the architrave for effective light block.
  For roman blinds, we can manufacture headboards with angled ends to allow the blinds to butt neatly together, creating an integrated finish and minimising light bleed. For pelmets, we supply as two or three joined pieces with mitred corners, ready to be installed seamlessly onsite.
• Recess-Mounted: Clean and minimal installation option for blinds. Ideal for modern interiors and where wall space is limited and full light blockout is not required. 

Bay windows are suited to roman and roller blinds, if the architrave has sufficient depth for the roman blind headboard or roller blind brackets. Ensure headboards and brackets on adjoining windows don’t touch each other and impact blind placement and operation.  

Corner windows are often best suited to roman blinds, as a roller blind’s brackets can interfere with each other at the meeting point, making operation difficult and reducing light coverage.

For blinds, also consider how they will be operated, whether by cord, chain or motorisation system as this can affect the headboard or bracket projection and will influence where the blind can be installed. 

Measure With Detail and Precision

Successful execution begins with accurate site measurements and detailed information provided on your order form.  Here’s what to provide to BQ Design:

• Are your blinds or pelmets intended for a bay or corner window?
  • If roman blinds are to butt together in a corner window, it’s essential to nominate the “butt” blind (which runs into the corner) and the “through” blind (which runs past it). This allows us to manufacture for a snug fit and minimise light gaps.

• Where will your blinds or pelmets be mounted?
  • When finalising your measurements, ensure any obstructions such as joinery, heating or cooling units, window openers are considered. 
  • For roller blind installation, we recommend taking multiple sets of brackets onsite to confirm the best placement and blind sizing. 
  • For wall or architrave mounted: do the blinds need to butt closely? if so provide a diagram of the window with measurements and angles of the back wall or architrave clearly specified, and we will ensure your blinds sit seamlessly together.
  • For recess mounted: either provide the dimensions of the recess and we will make adjustments to ensure perfect fit or alternatively provide finished blind size dimensions and adjustments will not be made.
  • Does the depth of the roman blind headboard or roller blind brackets need to differ from our standard configuration?
