Understanding the Custom Soft Furnishing Production Timeline

A step-by-step guide for interior designers and trade professionals

When it comes to delivering beautifully crafted custom soft furnishings for your clients, timing is everything. Whether you’re specifying Roman blinds for a heritage home or coordinating bedheads and bedspreads for a multi-room commercial project, understanding the production timeline ensures smoother planning, better installation coordination, and ultimately, happier clients.

At BQ Design, we’ve refined our process to support interior designers, window furnishing specialists and architects every step of the way — from concept through to collection. Here’s what you can expect when placing a custom order with us.

Confirm Design Details with Your Client

Before production begins, it’s essential to confirm all product specifications with your client. This includes:

  • Finalising the product design and dimensions
  • Selecting the fabric and any trims or embellishments
  • Confirming functionality, such as how blinds will operate or where a bedhead will be positioned

Not quite sure what works best in a particular space? Our team is happy to assist with design and fabrication advice. You can also explore our product pages for inspiration across our full range, including roller blinds, curtains, bedheads, and more.

Measure and Request a Quote

Once your selections are confirmed, you’ll need to take final measurements. Then, simply request a manufacturing quote from our team. We’ll confirm:

  • How much fabric is required
  • Estimated freight costs
  • Answers to any questions on fabric, design, sizing or installation

We also provide indicative manufacturing lead times, which vary depending on the product, complexity of design, and time of year.

Complete and Submit the BQ Order Form

You can download and complete the BQ Design Order Form available on our website. Please ensure all sections are completed accurately to prevent delays. Our friendly customer service team is always available to assist with any queries.

Order and Send Your Fabric

Next, place your fabric order through your preferred supplier. You can choose to:

  • Have the fabric sent directly to BQ Design, or
  • Receive it at your business first for inspection before forwarding it to us

We also offer free fabric collection from Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Canberra metro areas, making the process easier for you.

Scheduling Production in the Workroom

We’ll schedule your order in our Notting Hill workroom once we’ve received:

  • Your completed order form
  • All fabrics and trims
  • Any additional components or instructions

Before we proceed, our team will inspect all items and follow up with you if anything requires clarification.

Track Your Order Online

You can track the status of your order in real time via our Order Tracker. This allows you to:

  • View your order’s current stage
  • See the promised completion date
  • Coordinate with your installer ahead of time

We also send a weekly email update every Monday, summarising all your active orders.

Completion and Delivery

Once your order is complete, we’ll notify you and arrange either:

  • Freight delivery directly to your chosen address, or
  • Pick-up from our Notting Hill warehouse

You’re then free to coordinate installation with your installer or project team.

Plan with Confidence

By following this structured process, you’ll be able to manage timelines, maintain client confidence, and avoid unnecessary delays on-site. At BQ Design, we’re proud to support Australia’s most respected interior designers, window furnishing specialists, and architects with quality craftsmanship, dependable service, and industry-leading processes.
